This is one of my favorite pastels from my 8th grade year. I felt that the facial details were well captured in different grays and the sloppy red background was meaningful and chaotic, yet flows with the lining of the face.

I’ve never taken a professional art class though I have always wished to. I still love pastels and I’m still making them! The poem is entitled “These Barriers” and is meant to represent how society tends to restrain POC from positive imagery and tries to stuff stereotypes down our throats. It is also supposed to represent that together, POC are stronger, powerful, and “passionate”. I believe that no barriers can prevent honest passion.
